Jesus prayed for His disciples and for those who would place their faith in Him through hearing the message of Good News. He prayed for the unity of believers and that they would truly know that He was sent from the Father.
The last week in March 1 attended an International Church Discipleship Making Consultation at Glen Eyrie (the headquarters for the Navigators in Colorado Springs, CO). I joined with some eighty other believers: from around twenty different nations to learn more about discipleship. There were inspirational speakers from various pans of the world who taught on prayer, vision, the Christian life, and sharing your faith.
Each (lay during the conference I met in a work group in order to brain storm and grapple with questions related to discipleship and the local church. We had special times of prayer during the week and those attending reported on the progress of making disciples in their own corner of the world.
"To know Christ and to make Him known" is what the Navigators are all about. More Assemblies churches are now using the Navigator’s discipleship training series than any other church in the States. People are catching the burden and vision for both being and making disciples.
Effective discipleship training takes place when new disciples help to reproduce other disciples or followers of Christ.
I was indeed grateful to be able to receive an invitation to attend this conference expenses were paid for curing the conference by the Navigators). I learned most, I think, just by fellowshipping with others who attended and freely shared of their ministry.
One of the greatest needs for missions in Latin America is the training of leaders who will be faithful disciples and in turn help make other disciples. Please remember in prayer the discipleship group that Sue and I lead in our home and for the seminars on discipleship and evangelism that I will lead in the various zones throughout the country of El Salvador during the month of April.
Please also pray for effective ways to implement discipleship training in the Bible School and the local church.
More teams are needed to continue the construction work. If you are interested in investing in this training center for pastors, please contact us. or Avon Fowler at (904) 455-7666.
During the last week of February we were joined by a 43-rnember medial team to reach out to the people of eastern El Salvador.
Project Compassion, based in Southern California, is a ministry dedicated to meeting the physical as well as the spiritual needs of people. Under the excellent administration of Jack and Cyndi Bradhury, these doctors, nurses, pharmacists and assistants made a difference in the lives of between 1,500 and 2,000 people, as well as in our own lives.
Compassion is people touching people… in Jesus' Name. And that's what they did. In the departments of San Miguel, La Union and Morazan they set up portable clinics and provided free consultations and medicines as well as prayer, counseling and evangelistic literature to each person that attended.
The comments we heard at the close of the week were of how kind the team was in treating the people, and of the unity among the members of the group. They worked together, willing to serve in whatever capacity, and they did it to touch people for Jesus.
It was extra special to see our children, Jonathan am Rachel, work as interpreters. The example the team set as they listened to and treated people was unequaled in our children's experience.
From the ex-guerilla settlement of Segundo Montes, and Tejera, in Morazan, to Lislique in La Union, to the Bible School in San Miguel, hurting people came to receive treatment for their bodies and ointment for their souls. Twelve years of civil war have left these areas hurting in many ways; the healing process is on-going and Project Compassion's part will have a lasting effect.
Pray for the church beginning in Segundo Montes and the continuing ministries of the pastors in the other areas.
I've be having fun with ill the mangos that have been falling lately. It s now the hottest time of the year and it's nice to sit out under the trees… but look out below.
By favorite activity these days is riding my bike around our big yard and dodging the mangos. I also loved helping as an interpreter in the pharmacy when the team was here (Hi Candace!). They were really neat.
Recently I got to go to 2 check-ups in one day! I went to the dentist first and he cleaned my teeth and showed lime how to brush and gave me a balloon when I left. Then I went to the ear doctor. It turned out OK (the problem was selective listening, I guess whatever that means). On my way out he gave me some candy and I told my mom, "This doctor knows all about ears, but I guess lie doesn't know about teeth yet!"
A couple of months ago we went to church up past Osicala. We passed a church made of sticks (literally) and dad said we were going to be at that church the following week. Well, the next Sunday we got there and they were making a new little church out of adobe blocks at the same location. Abby explained to me that the Big Bad Wolf blew down the stick church and that was why they were building a new one out of bricks...
